Cerys Tandy has become the first Explore Scout to complete the Explorer Belt Award since the unit was established.

After attending the World Scout Jamboree in Japan in 2016, Cerys made friends with other Explorer Scouts from Clyde Region. During her training for WorldJam the team were also planning the route they would take for the Explorer Belt Expedition.

In June 2017 the group boarded a coach in Glasgow for their 30 hour journey to the base near Salzburg, Austria.

Cerys says “During our trip we stayed in nine towns; Franking and Nubdorf am Haunsberg in Austria, then Laufen / Oberndorf on the Austrian – German border before heading into Germany to visit Petting, Teisendorf, Anger and Piding and finishing back in Austria in beautiful Salzburg”.

Cerys continues “My favourite challenge was to visit filming locations from The Sound of Music and where possible re-enact scenes. We spent an entire day working on this in Salzburg and even visited the nunnery where not only was filming carried out, but the real Maria von Trapp was married”.

“The 10 days I spent with my amazing team were truly incredible. We explorer town and villages and met the people in a way normal tourists don’t often get the chance”.

Upon returning home Cerys and the team made their presentation and were awarded their certificates & belts at a ceremony in Glasgow.

I want the public to know how Scouting continues to open young people’s eyes to a world of extraordinary promise and possibilities.'
